William was born in Belfast, and studied Electronic Engineering at Newtownabbey Technical College, prior to playing as a part-time footballer.
Murphy previously played for Ards and Carrick Rangers. He has played in central defence for Linfield since 1997 and has been granted a Testimonial year.
He was named as the Ulster Footballer of the Year for the 2006/07 season.[1]
On 27 May 2009 Murphy was charged with introducing counterfeit bank notes into Spain. The player was arrested earlier in May 2009, while visiting Torremolinos on a stag party with some team-mates. The arrest related to an incident in Spain in 2007 when he was detained after allegedly passing counterfeit money.[2] Murphy appeared before a court in Madrid on 3 June 2009, and was then released on bail, to appear in court again within two months.[3]
During this season William Murphy was placed in the transfer list by his club and also fined for a breach of discipline within the club. The club have not stated what this issue is.[4]
